You can stop Metro UI replacing your Start menu by tweaking the registry - see http://www.askvg.com/how-to-enable-good-old-windows-vista-and-7-style-start-menu-in-windows-8-developer-preview/ for example.

I've installed Windows 8 on a tablet where the Metro UI is rather more welcome. My biggest gripe at the moment is the inability to close Metro UI applications without killing them in Task Manager - I think the idea is that you don't *need* to close them, so there is no nice UI to do so, but every app you open shows up in the task switcher so it gets cluttered pretty fast. A Symbian-like task switcher would be much appreciated.

What you wrote is not true anymore, there has been big changes in Ovi Store.

1) Currentöy Nokia's Ovi Store is open for both individual developers and companies. So also individual developers van register as a publisher in Ovi Store. You don't need to be related to some company.

2) Currently registering as a publisher costs only 1 Euro, yes only one single Euro.

3) Currently Nokia offers free signing of Symbian, Qt and java Apps for Ovi Store publishers. So if you have registered as Ovi Store Publisher then you can get your apps signed for free. Signing costs nothing. You also don'
t need to buy a developer certificate. All you need to do is to register as a publisher and then ask Nokia to create developer certificate key paitr and UID for you. You can then develop and test your application. When you app is ready send it to Ovi Store and Nokia will test and sing it for free. it ciosts you nothing.

There has been also lots of growth in Ovi Store. Currently more than 2.7 million downloads / day is made from Ovi Store. And during last year more than 400000 new developers have registered.

Amazingly useful post.

I had no idea publishing to the Ovi store was so expensive. I was going to publish a few games, not expecting to make much money at all, but this really makes me have second thoughts.

I wonder how much it costs to publish Android apps.

I used to play this sliding thing as a kid as well, the one I had was a promotional one with the company logo.

My app is one of top 100 best-sellers games (for non-touch-screen handsets) in ovi store. And, so far (from may 1 to may 20, 2010), it has been sold only 43 copies. The price is 1 euro for each software and my revenue shows nearly 23 euro.
